Barbados Player Misses IM Title

FM TERRY FARLEY

National chess champion FM Ryan Harper had the best performance of the three Trinidad and Tobago entries to the sub-zonal tournament held recently in Venezuela. Harper finished the nine round contest with 4 points, placing tenth among the 16 players from Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, T&T, Barbados and Jamaica. Dr Eddison Chang scored 3 points for the 14th place while Marcus Joseph was 16th with 2.5.

The results of the sub-zonal round of the world championships, however, indicates the high standard of chess in Barbados as Terry Farley barely missed achieving the second IM title for his country.

Farley was leading the contest with a surging undefeated six points after seven rounds and needed only one point from his last two matches for a tournament victory and Barbados’ second IM title.

However, he lost the two final matches and was surpassed by Winston Boada of Venezuela who tallied 6.5 points. He ended joint second and secured the most recent FM title for Barbados. Delisle Warner earned the last title in 2002.

Caribbean fans were also looking at Shane Matthews of Jamaica in his quest for a FIDE title. He had a realistic chance but lost his last two games. He finished 7th with 4.5 points.
